In a project focused on “The Future of Streets” we examined the conflicts and opportunities that emerge when city streets are retooled for new shared, electric and autonomous vehicles. Specifically, we researched and imagined policy, design and planning options for cities to ensure that new street-based mobility solutions maximize multi-modal, socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable accessibility.
We prepared an AV roll-out strategy including policy and street design recommendations. We also created a specific vision for two intersections in the Boston area (Summer Street in Boston, with the intersection in front of South Station and Sumner Road in Cambridge, with the Kirkland Street intersection), designing out two “future conditions” - one where mobility changes have reached 100% point of completion and where mobility changes have reached about a 50% point of completion (i.e. what is the path to 100%). We aimed to promote equitable mobility and accessibility and to encourage the transition to shared, pooled AVs.
