91% of world's population lives in areas with unhealthy levels of air pollution, causing millions of premature deaths and myriad health conditions. Global pollution has become so bad that the danger to health of walking or cycling outdoors can outweigh the benefits of the exercise.
This decision tool makes actionable a dataset from a new study assessing the risk–benefit balance between physical activity and exposure to air pollution across a range of scenarios. Users of the tool can see how global cities’ pollution ranges compare, view a heatmap with relative risk of exercise lengths and intensities in various pollution levels, and receive a localized, real-time recommendation.
Data: Tainio et al (2016) Can air pollution negate the health benefits of cycling and walking?
